Every Square Inch
These photographs come from a desire to know every square inch of the ranch, a family property, a longing to remember everything there, and a hope that much will remain and flourish. With this desire to hold on to what’s there and an understanding of impermanence I collect plants, wildflowers and weeds. Their beauty surprises me. The possibility of their disappearance and the changing land urges me to create an impossible photographic archive of the totality of this place. Botanical pressings are placed on photographs, the images an expression of the beauty of the land and seed packets.
Every Square Inch is a companion series with the J9 Suite. Two sets of images from Every Square Inch are shown here. Images for all these series are taken at the J9 Ranch in San Diego’s high desert backcountry. The sub series displayed here are Oak Air, and Sagebrush Sense. Ways of Knowing is part of Every Square Inch and is shown on a separate page.
